“TELL ME YOU have news.”

Bill was not happy. He’d attended a black-tie event last night by himself and had to make up a story about why Hope wasn’t with him. As if anything she would be off doing could be more important.

His lead detective had wanted to meet, so they sat in a coffee shop around the corner from the Capitol building.

“I do,” he confirmed. “I was able to trace her route out of New Orleans using traffic cameras. She went through Texas to Dallas, then north to Oklahoma. Then she turned west again to Colorado. Last camera that saw her was three days ago, heading north from Denver.”

“What’s north of Denver?”

“A whole lot of nothing called Wyoming. Few towns and no traffic cams. She could be anywhere in the state.”

“She has to be out of money by now, which means she needs a job.”

“We’ve checked, nothing so far has come in for an employment record for her, no background checks, no withholding forms, nothing.”

“Maybe she’s using a different name,” Bill mused. “Got some sap to buy a sad story to protect her but still let her work.”

“If she’s using a fake name, we’ll never find her.”

Bill sat back in his chair, thinking. There was absolutely no way Hope was going to outsmart him. It was time to play his trump card.

“Keep working on it,” he told the detective, getting up to leave.

His first move on the way back to the office would be to stop by the police station, the next to call a press conference.
